This is the second installment of our Small Game Series, a series of articles in which we discuss–in brief–various games with small boxes and/or small footprints. We’ll discuss what makes the game enjoyable, who might enjoy it, player count and implications of such, how big the box actually is (i.e. will it fit in your cargo shorts pocket or are you better off putting it in your backpack?), depth of gameplay, and why this game was selected. This time we’ve got Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies. Let’s dive into it!

Why it’s Good

Tiny Epic Galaxies–the small-box game of epic proportions–is one of my favorites. And, by the amount of chatter I pick up from groups and other places, Tiny Epic Galaxies is a favorite Tiny Epic game for many people. Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies is good because it offers a ton of gameplay. The decisions of how to use and modify dice make this a thinker, and the solo experience is likewise wonderful (one of my favorites solo). There’s a reason Tiny Epic Galaxies is heralded as one of the best of the Tiny Epic series, and the only changes made to the Ultra-Tiny version is its size. It even includes a mini expansion!

Who it’s For

Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies is for anyone on the go. More particularly, it is for fans of dice games, strategy games, and solo gamers. It’s a lighter-mid-weight game as far as complexity, making it good for all types of gamers.

Player Count

This is a wonderful game for solo gamers, but also plays up to five people. The number of players able to play provides a good range for many situations.

Pocket or Backpack?

This game is so compact that it can probably fit snugly inside your jeans pocket. I know for a fact that it fits well in my cargo shorts, and leaves room for more. Definitely portable and easy to take with you practically anywhere.

Depth

The depth of gameplay, as mentioned, is deep enough to sate the needs of fans of heavier games, but also simple enough that new gamers can find joy and success as well.

Why I Chose Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies

I chose Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies as a small-box game of excellence for many reasons. Obviously, the box is small which makes it a cinch to port around. Besides the box, however, the gameplay is straight fun, and provides good use of dice manipulation, strategy, and, of course, theme.

Conclusion

When it comes down to it, Ultra-Tiny Epic Galaxies is basically a permanent fixture in my travels. I’ve loved the original for a very long time, and this one is the same game, just smaller. What more could I ask for? It’s everything I want in a small-box game.
